Fall is the one season everyone tries to bring inside. It's not just about sweaters and pumpkin patches — it's about walking through your front door and having your home actually smell like the season. Most people reach for a candle to do this. There's a simpler, cheaper, and more effective way.
The problem with candles and plug-ins
Scented candles and plug-in air fresheners rely on synthetic fragrance oils and, in the case of candles, an open flame. Fragrance oils are formulated for strength and shelf life, not accuracy — which is why so many "fall" candles smell more like a generic sweet spice blend than anything specific. And candles come with their own list of downsides: soot buildup on walls and ceilings over time, an open flame to manage around kids and pets, and a scent that mostly stays within a few feet of the candle itself.
The alternative: a simmer pot
A simmer pot is exactly what it sounds like — a small pot of water with real ingredients, simmered low on the stove for a few hours. As the water heats, it releases the natural aromatic oils in whatever you've added, carrying real scent through your kitchen and the rooms nearby. No flame to manage beyond your stove, no synthetic fragrance, and a scent that actually smells like what's in the pot.
To get started, you need:
- A small saucepan you don't mind dedicating to this
- Water
- Real fall ingredients: cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, orange or apple slices, a vanilla bean, or fresh cranberries
Add your ingredients to the pot, cover with water, bring to a light simmer, then reduce to the lowest heat that keeps it gently steaming. Check the water level every hour and top it off as needed so it never boils dry.
Building a fall scent routine, not just a one-off
The easiest way to actually keep your home smelling like fall all season — rather than just for the one afternoon you remembered to simmer a pot — is to build it into a routine. A lot of our customers keep a simmer pot going most weekend afternoons, or as part of a Sunday reset before the week starts.
If you'd rather not restock ingredients yourself every few weeks, that's the whole idea behind our Ritual Subscription — a monthly box of real, pre-portioned simmer blends, including a seasonal-exclusive that changes with the year. This month, that's Pumpkin Hearth: real pumpkin, whole clove, and cinnamon bark, available through November.
